What is Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Spinal decompression therapy is a treatment used to relieve pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. It is a non-invasive treatment that uses a computer-generated traction force to separate the vertebrae and create negative pressure within the discs. This helps to draw the bulging or herniated disc material back into the disc space.

It is often used to treat conditions such as spinal stenosis, herniated discs, and sciatica. The therapy works by gently stretching the spine, which creates space for the nerves and relieves pressure.

Spinal decompression therapy is a non-surgical procedure that uses traction to effectively treat pain in the lower back, neck, and radiating leg and arm. This type of traction has been shown to be successful in relieving pain associated with spinal disc herniation, degenerative spinal discs, and facet joint syndromes. Spinal decompression therapy works by decompressing the spinal discs and facet joints, which reduces pressure and tension on the spine.

What Does Spinal Decompression Therapy Treat?

Spinal Decompression Therapy helps relieve back pain and/or leg pain by stretching the spine using a traction table or similar motorized device. This procedure is called nonsurgical decompression therapy (as opposed to surgical spinal decompression, such as laminectomy and microdiscectomy).

Some common reasons you might seek spinal decompression treatment include:

Dealing with bulging discs, which is when a cushion between vertebrae bulges out.
Dealing with degenerative discs, which is when the cushion between vertebrae bulges out.
Herniated discs, which is when a part of a disc pushes on a nerve.
Pinched nerves, which is when a nerve gets compressed and causes numbness, pain, or tingling.
Sciatica, which is damage to your sciatic nerve.
Spinal stenosis, which is when the narrowing of the spinal column puts pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. It can cause pain, numbness, and weakness in the arms and legs.

What to Expect

A big hesitation many patients have before seeking treatment stems from not knowing what to expect, or how long their treatments will last. At Comprehensive Medical Care, we take our time to walk you through the process, and ensure you’re in-the-know each step of the way. Our Spinal Decompression Treatment takes place in 5-phases:

Initial Visit

From your first visit to the 4-week mark, during this time we will be taking X-rays and evaluating the results of such.

Conservative Care

Within 7 days of your 4-week follow up we will schedule an EMG, Catscan or Ultrasound. Traction treatments will re-occur over the next month and half, followed by a re-evaluation, which could lead to intervention.

Intervention

If your re-evaluation shows that intervention is needed, your provider will determine if medication or injections are the best to escalate your treatment to. If for any reason, those aren't a fit for your injury, surgery may be discussed at this point.

Discharge

At this step in the process, you will be feeling much better as you've reached your Maximum Medical Improvement. While you will be discharged, it's important to maintain your wellness and movement.
