October: National Physical Therapy Month

October is National Physical Therapy Month, a month dedicated to recognizing physical therapists for their efforts and raising awareness of the benefits of physical therapy (PT) . At Comprehensive Medical Care, we provide customized PT programs that help patients return to their prior level of functioning, with the ultimate goal of improving overall health and well-being.

This National Physical Therapy Month, we want to share everything you need to know about this form of therapy and how it may help you feel better, improve your mobility, reduce your pain and prevent long-term disabilities.

What is Physical Therapy?

PT is the art and science of physical care and rehabilitation. This type of therapy uses exercise, stretching, heat, light, cold, massage, and other forms of therapy to improve a patient’s strength, mobility, and endurance. PT provides the tools necessary for patients to restore functionality and regain their independence.

Physical therapists (PTs) are licensed and board-certified primary health care professionals who specialize in diagnosing and treating neurological and musculoskeletal acute injuries and chronic pain. PTs play an integral part in helping individuals with injuries and disabilities lead quality lives.

Physical therapists use a combination of treatments in order to provide the best care for their patients. Treatments may include:

  • Heat and/or cold therapy
  • Exercise and physical conditioning
  • Massage therapy
  • Manual therapy

What Can Physical Therapy Help With?

Physical therapists take the time to thoroughly examine each patient and analyze movement patterns before developing a treatment plan catered toward improving mobility, reducing pain, restoring function and preventing long-term disability.

Common medical conditions treated by physical therapists include:

  • Sports injuries
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Back and neck pain
